About Us
Operated by Caritas Alba Iulia since 2016, Jakab Antal House offers accommodation, dining services and well-equipped conference rooms for individual guests, pilgrims and groups.
The peaceful surroundings of Șumuleu Ciuc provide an ideal setting for conferences, training sessions, spiritual retreats, as well as community and family programmes. The House is named after former bishop Jakab Antal, who founded Caritas Alba Iulia in 1990.
Accommodation and dining
Jakab Antal House offers comfortable accommodation and dining for 130 guests, whether for a brief stop or a longer pilgrimage.
Accessible options
Accessible rooms are available for guests with reduced mobility, while our restaurant and several event rooms are also wheelchair accessible.
Conferences and events
Jakab Antal House has 10 conference rooms of various sizes, equipped with modern technical facilities. They are suitable for small meetings, training sessions, conferences and larger events.

Our colleagues carry out their tasks with dedication every day, contributing through their work to the quality of Jakab Antal House's services and to the daily life of our community.
We provide people with disabilities with a supportive workplace where they can carry out meaningful tasks suited to their abilities, gain new experiences and develop their strengths.
Working together strengthens their independence and self-confidence while creating opportunities for personal development and community participation. Through their activities, they create value and play an active role in the everyday life of the Jakab Antal House community.
Dining
Our restaurant can accommodate 120–130 guests. Three private dining rooms are available for smaller gatherings or private meals, while the main dining hall is an ideal venue for larger events.
We are open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Our buffet-style pilgrim menu is available from 1:00 p.m. and includes two soups and two main courses, with a meat-free option offered every day. The menu is available in both traditional and gluten- and lactose-free versions.
During the warmer months, guests can also dine on the terrace. The café in the main building is open throughout the day for guests staying at the House.

Three Decades in the Service of Faith and Charity
On 2 June, an anniversary celebration was held at Jakab Antal House in Șumuleu Ciuc, marking the establishment of the institution and its thirty years of service.

Renewable energy for the Jakab Antal House through the Electric Up programme
In 2021, Caritas Alba Iulia applied for funding through the Electric Up programme to install a photovoltaic system on the roof of the Jakab Antal House.
Jakab Antal House Renovated for Pope Francis’s Visit to Șumuleu Ciuc
At the beginning of 2019, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis would visit Șumuleu Ciuc on 1 June. Less than five months were available for the preparations, which was a relatively short period for organising an event of this scale.
Renovation Work Completed Ahead of the Papal Visit
The renovation work carried out ahead of the papal visit has been completed. Over the past few months, the terrace adjoining the House’s restaurant has been renovated and is now accessible to wheelchair users.
Renovation of the Courtyard at Jakab Antal House Completed
There was great joy when the Vatican announced Pope Francis’s visit to Romania at the beginning of 2019. By that time, 80% of the building’s renovation had already been completed, but it was also essential for the courtyard to be made suitable for this special occasion.

Renovation Work Funded by the Bethlen Gábor Fund Completed
The aim was to make more pilgrimage programmes, spiritual retreats, high-quality training courses and meaningful events available to the people of Transylvania in modern, welcoming and affordable surroundings.
